I’ve been trying finger coils out on my son’s kinky hair without gel and now I high key wish I had a TWA to try it out for myself. Shoot I still might so don’t count me out! After doing this style on Kem’s hair a few times, I’ve already picked up on some tips that’ll give me the best results. What’s more amazing to me is that I was able to achieve this style without gel. Just my go to Coconut Mango Butter and Nourishing Hair Oil from Kinky Tresses.
Tips on Creating Finger Coils
No Gel Needed
While you probably think this style may require half a tub of gel, it is actually possible without gel at all. It’s just important to make sure that the area you are working on is damp enough to be manipulated to create the coil.
Rolling Is Essential
To achieve coils with excellent hold it’s all in the technique. The key is to roll your medium to small sections between your index finger and thumb. Next twirl the section around your index finger and repeat.
Avoid Breakage
It’s easy to damage your ends if doing this one, HUGE no-no. As you’re coiling or twirling your sections, do not allow your hair to become snuggly wrapped around your finger. Allow all fingers to be free of the coil from beginning to end.
Freestyle Fingers
Unless you want meticulous parts and curly sue perfection you don’t need one of those combs you see the stylist using on your Instagram feed. I be watchin them because they’re satisfying to watch, but not practical if you’re doing them on your own fro.
Unravel with a Twirl
Typically finger coils are separated once they are fully dry for additional volume and of course more curls. Maintain your definition during desperation by twirling each separates piece before releasing it.
Be Humble, Tie It Down
To help the curls set, the use of a head scarf or durag is crucial. They sit firmly against your coils when tied and this prevents them from getting ruined as you sleep. If you do use a bonnet, a stocking cap on top will do the job of keeping your coils firmly in place.
So yeah! This style actually lasted for the entire week. I didn’t tie down his head after the first night and there were still coils intact after 6 days of wild sleeping and hand in hair syndrome.
