Every been ready to take down your crochet braids, box braids, or any other protective style, but something comes up and you the style to go the distance. That’s just what happened to me with my latest crochet braids style. I was ready to take it down, but the busy weekend ahead dictated otherwise. The style itself is still in great condition, but my scalp needed some refreshing and relief from itchiness. Typically I refresh and cleanse my scalp in protective styles with a quick wash and go, but wet spots on my clothes is not a good first impression. I came across some Cantu products created specifically for protective style care and decided to give Cantu Apple Cider Vinegar Root Relief a try.
All the Deets Cantu Shea Butter Apple Cider Vinegar Root Relief
Cantu Apple Cider Vinegar Root Relief is a transparent gel made with apple cider vinegar, peppermint oil and shea butter formulated to refresh and sooth your scalp when in protective styles. It claims to be great for protective styles like weaves, locs, braids, and other extension type styles. It’s free of mineral oil, sulfates, parabens, silicones, phthalates, gluten, paraffin or propylene.
I applied a generous amount to my scalp in between each cornrow in my crochet braid style, rubbed my scalp, and let it dry! That’s it!
The key ingredients is peppermint oil. Peppermint oil helps to prevent the growth of any fungi or bacteria on the scalp that may contribute to itching. It’s great to incorporate in your hair care routine especially if you workout or are in hot, sweat inducing climates. Cantu ACV Root Relief also includes tea tree oil which has the same function as the peppermint oil.
Did It Work?
It most definitely did! I could feel the cooling sensation from the min oils, but it wasn’t so strong that it burned or irritated my scalp. I loved that I was able to refresh my scalp without going through a whole in the shower process. It’s something that you can literally do in 2 minutes (and that’s generous) and be on your merry way out the door.
Cost
This product only costs around $5. I only needed to use this product once at the week to start of with fresh feeling hair so you’re going to get a lot of use out of it. It’s super convenient to be able to just buy a product like this vs spending way more than $5 to create your own DIY product. Peppermint oil by itself costs around $5-7 so it definitely saves.
Note:
I don’t think that this product is necessarily for cleansing. It’s just for relieving itching and giving your scalp a little bit of moisture and a fresh feeling. None of the claims on the product (soothes, relieves, refreshes,) speak to a claim to cleanse. However, Cantu does have two other products that claim to cleanse that are beneficial when wearing protective styles and you can see them below!
