Never say never y’all. About 3 to 4 years ago I posted a video about why I would never ever evah color my 4c natural hair. You can see it here, but please don’t judge my 4 year ago self, please! 🙂 The main concern for me was having to regularly maintain my hair to avoid excessive dryness to my treated hair which could result in breakage. There were a myriad of other reasons, but I went against Mika of Years Past self and said eff it. I just know that I wanted a change and I wanted it then and there. I didn’t want to have a whole salon experience for such a small switch up so I took the box color system route.
The Natural Hair Color System
I loved the results that I got from the Dark and Lovely Fade Resistant Rich Conditioning Lightener system in the past when I colored the ends of my Xotica Hair 4a/4b clip-ins. So for my own natural hair I decided to go with the same Light Golden Blonde color number 384. I was definitely not going for a blonde as blonde as the naturalista on the box, but I knew what my results would look like based on the result chart and how dark my own hair is. The darker your hair the more warm the blonde will turn out after the recommended time.
The Color Application Method
I parted my hair in medium to large sections and secured a hair tie at the point where I wanted my new hair color to stop. There’s no need to worry about having a blunt line of demarcation between colors when you have curly hair because curly strands are not uniform in the way they curl and shrink.
After mixing the components of the hair color according the directions (please read ALL directions before doing anything), I applied the mixture to my ends and let it sit for about 20 minutes. I checked on the progress every 5-10 minutes. Once the time was up, I rinsed it out and gave my hair lots of love with a hydrating wash and deep condition session that included the deep conditioner provided in the color kit.
The whole process took less than a 1-hour wash day to the tunes of SZA, Kendrick Lamar, and Rihanna. I love the results that I got from using this system and I haven’t noticed a significant difference between my lighter strands and untouched strands. They ends don’t feel dry and crunchy any more than my virgin natural hair when it is in need of remoisturizing. My texture has not changed either. If that changes I will definitely do a follow-up post.
As my hair continues to grow and I continue to trim, the color will gradually be gone, but that’s ok. At least I know I have this as an option when I want to switch things up.

It looks gorgeous. I colored my hair in a similar way about 4 years ago with textures and tones. It was fun while it lasted but my ends were so dry so I eventually cut the colored potion off after about a year and colored my hair all black. I want to color again. Sigh…
