Y’all know how much I love thrifting at Goodwills in the Big Bend area so when Goodwill reached out wanting me to create a DIY Halloween Costume, I was super psyched! This look and the whole creative process inspired me to share tips to creating your own costume and backdrop for Halloween. You may already have many of these pieces from summer in your wardrobe. However thrift stores like Goodwill are a great source for any essentials you may be missing. So check out these key pieces you can thrift for your own DIY fortune teller costume.
DIY Fortune Teller Costume Style Essentials
Off the Shoulder Top
Hands down you’ve got to have long sleeve off the shoulder for this costume. The more dramatic the sleeves the better. I’ve had this black bell sleeve off the shoulder top for years (from Rainbow) and it just keeps on giving.
Flowy Kimono Tops
Geez did I get lucky when I found this celestial sun and moon print kimono! I layered it over the off the shoulder top to make the sleeves more dramatic.
Maxi Skirt or Wide Leg Pants
Most fortune teller costumes include flowy maxi skirts on the bottom and Goodwill doesn’t seem to ever run out of those! I came across these wide leg satin pants the same day I thrifted the celestial kimono and they match so well. The wide, flowy legs fit right in with the relaxed look.
Wide Waist Belt
This thrifted woven wide waist belt is a fave especially in the fall season. Most fortune teller outfits have either a corset or a wide waist belt to define the waist in the midst of all the free flowing pieces.
Headwraps
Any sort of head wrap or long strip of fabric will do! I used a long strip of scrap fabric for a more dramatic look.
Chunky Statement Jewelry
The stereotypical fortune teller is just covered in jewelry so use as much or as little as you want! The earrings are definitely on the bigger side regardless. I used my favorite statement earrings from Rainbow. I’ve had them for over 5 years and they haven’t turned colors! What?!
Crystal Ball
I thrifted this glass orb paperweight long before this partnership came about. It was so serendipitous that it ended up being the most essential part of this DIY fortune teller costume. I also recommend clear globe light mounts from any hardware store if you can’t find one at Goodwill. Just add some battery operated fairy lights for a glory effect.
DIY Fortune Teller Photoshoot Backdrop
Thrift store is the perfect place to find decor and trinkets that fit the aesthetic. Aged, rustic decor pieces like this birdcage/basket and these candle holder goblets fit perfectly with the vibe. Fortune tellers and their spaces always seem to be shrouded in fabrics with interesting textures, shine, and rich colors. I picked up a few curtains to cover my Opalhouse egg chair and a side table I keep buy it. Goodwill is good for having vintage style curtains. I also used some extra orange burlap fabric I had laying around as “seamless backdrop” and expanded it through an editing app. Magic!
All that was left was to have fun creating the images you see here and on Instagram. Hope you found this DIY thrifted Halloween costume idea inspirational!
