I was shopping for welcome mats and didn’t really find one that spoke to me and our space. Then I noticed that Target had blank welcome mats and my DIY mind kicked in. I got completely sidetracked and decided to create a DIY welcome mat for plant lovers. When I say side tracked, I completely forgot that the mat was suppose to be for the front door. This one will be right off the office which is the entrance to the outdoor patio and backyard. So let’s get into show I made this DIY Welcome Mat Without A Cricut.
Supplies
Blank Door Mat (Here’s the link to the one I got.)
Spray Paint
Reynolds Freezer Paper
Cutting Tool (Exacto Knife or Sharp Paring Knife-My fave for cutting out shapes)
Iron
Printer
How to Make DIY Welcome Mat Without A Cricut
- Measure your welcome mat and use a “inches-to-pixels” converter to get the dimensions in pixels.
- Create a blank project with those pixel dimensions in PicMonkey (or Canva if you’re team Canva). This is literally your welcome mat in digital form.
- Create your design based on what you want on your welcome mat.
Note: For a less time consuming designs I’d recommend a font like Arial Black. The letters and blank spaces inside letters like “O” are spacious enough to get good results from this project.
4. Once you’re done with your design save it and print it in multiple pages. This spreads the design across as many pages as you select in printer setup. I printed my design on 9 pages. When you increase the number of pages you’re also increasing the size of the design.
5. Tape the pages together, tape the whole thing to a poster board, and then tape a sheet of Reynold’s Freezer Paper shiny side down onto the design. I use foam poster board to make sure I’m not scratching any surface I’m working on.
6. Cut out the letters and other design elements. You should be able to see your design through the freezer paper. When you’re done, congrats you now have a stencil.
7. Iron your stencil onto the welcome mat. The heat makes the plastic coated side lightly adhere to the mat. Be careful not to shift the mat too much as it will lift from the mat. I used a poster board to move the whole mat without bending it.
8. Spray paint at a 90 degree angle above the mat and let it dry.
There you have it your own DIY Welcome mat and if you followed mine exactly your own DIY Welcome Mat for Plant Lovers. This DIY mat is just perfect for my planty outdoor patio space. This will make a fun seasonal activity to do on your own or with the family. Enjoy!
