More often than not, I let looks that I put together tell me what my next style post is going to be about. So when I threw my Who What Wear collection leopard coat and ASOS gingham ruffle dress next to each other on my bed and saw how great they looked together, I had a light bulb ding ding ding moment . I knew that I had to talk about how to mix prints to create one bomb outfit.
How to Mix Prints Like a Pro
It’s All In The Color Family
While prints usually consist of two to a whole lot of colors it’s still very easy to find prints that compliment each other. My favorite way to do this is by identifying what color is the most dominant in the print and then choosing a print with a complimentary dominant color.
Treat Prints Like Neutrals
When it came to this look, I treated my Who What Wear leopard print faux fur coat like a neutral. My gingham ruffle dress would go great with the coat whether it was all black or all camel/beige. So why not both?! Apply this concept to items you’re thinking about pairing and go for it. Basic prints and patterns with only two colors (stripes, leopard prints, or polka dots) are some of the easiest prints to treat as neutrals.

Play with Scales
Another fun and very safe way to mix prints is to use the same print everywhere with varying print sizes. So if you have a large scale print for bottoms and a smaller size of the same print on the top. While the prints are different in size, it’s still a cohesive look because they are essentially the same.
Inverted Prints
Try wearing the same prints together, but with inverted colors. This look is very easy to pull off with black and white prints like polka dots, houndstooth, and Ahem *points to photo* gingham, but don’t stop there. Try it out with colored prints as well.
Tie It All Together
Whether the prints you’re wearing are closely related or not adding a finishing touch that brings the whole look together can make you like like a print mixing boss. Outerwear (jackets, blazers, dusters), bags, belts, and other accessories are the perfect way to accomplish this.
Bonus Tip! Confidence Never Looked Better
No matter what you’re wearing you have go to just own it and cosign your style decision one hundred percent. At the end of the day you have authority over your body, your bills, and your clothing so as long as you love it do you!
