A new school year isn’t the only thing that my son and I are entering this year. We are not on a natural hair journey as well. Another post about some of the reasons why we are on this natural hair journey is coming up soon, but for now I wanted to share with you how our first 4c hair wash day went.
He currently has a TWA (teeny weeny afro) in a temp fade or tapered cut style for the new school year. We are relatively new to this journey so I decided to start with products and tools that I know work in my own kinky, type 4 natural hair. For starters I know that my 8 year old ball of energy has a more physically active lifestyle than I do which means that his hair will require more frequent cleansing than my weekly or bi-weekly wash day routine.
Key Steps to Our Natural Hair Wash Day Routine
Clean & Moisturized
Shampoos that do a good job of cleansing and clarifying while still maintaining good moisture levels are key. Sulfate free shampoos and even cleansing cowashes are the best route to take for very frequent hair washing.
2 -in-1 Deep Conditioners
I’ve grown to be very bougie when it comes to the function of the deep conditioners I use. If my hair and now my son’s hair isn’t soft and easy to detangle after using one, I don’t repurchase. However it is still a good idea to keep a slippery conditioner around for natural hair that’s a bit more tangled than usual. It’s a great way to save coins if your deep conditioner’s are rather pricey or you just don’t want to use to much to get through those tangles.
Thermal Haircare Hot Head is KEY
The Thermal Haircare Hot Head has been good to my natural hair over the years and I wanted it to be a part of my son’s natural hair routine as well. It’s built in flaxseed system retains heat for up to 30 minutes after being heated in the microwave (1.5 -2.5 minutes). Once our hot heads are heated, we put them on and we’re able to make the most of our deep conditioning session; whether that means getting packed for the first day of school or watching tv while mommy gets ready for back to school…apparently.
I remember when Thermal Haircare first came about and the options for prints were few. I’m glad to report that they have quite an array of fun, vibrant prints for adults and kids, and more chill, neutral prints for the chill personalities in your family.
I’m really excited to see how my son’s hair flourishes under my care. No matter what products we try I out I know that our Thermal Haircare Hot Heads are here to stay. Feel free to check out all of my 4c hair wash day videos featuring my Thermal Haircare Hot Head here.
