With the Total Recall-esque heat that surely will affect us this summer, your girl is definitely not tryna’ put on a whole bunch of makeup. Nope. Sorry not sorry. I just can’t. Can stop will stop. I have oily acne prone skin and the heat just puts my oiliness beyond 100. There’s not a highlighter in the world that’ll make our skin shine brighter than oily skin does. In anticipation of the season of “not doing too much” I’ve been using a skin care routine that gives me smooth and significantly less oily skin.
Oily Skin Acne Prone Skin Skincare Routine Steps
Cleanse
If I just happen to have on makeup, I start off by wiping as much of that off as I can with face cleansing wipes. I either use baby wipes or whatever cleansing wipes I’m trying out. I’ve been using Shea Moisture’s Black Soap … for a smooth 3 weeks and I’m able to get the majority of makeup off with only 2 sheets.
Next I wash my face with Neutrogena’s Pink Grapefruit facial washes. There’s the regular face wash and the one with little microbeads for exfoliation. I alternate between the two depending on how grimey of a day I’ve had. They both contain salicylic acid as their active ingredient. Salicylic acid breaks up cells and declogs pores from black heads, reduces oil production, and also contributes to the lightening of old breakout discoloration.
Tone
Using a toner/astringent after cleansing your face helps to tighten the pores and in so doing reduce the oil that those pores can produce. It also serves as a final cleanser of any dirt, oils, or makeup (I judge not), that you may have missed. This is definitely one step that I do not skip. My face feels snatched, oil-free, and poreless after toning. Don’t sleep on toning.
Moisturize
“For what?! I already have oily acne prone skin!” That is true and it’s believed that having oily skin is actually a perk because it gives you that built in glow, no highlighter needed. It’s also a misconception that moisturizers are the devil for oily skin. However, oily skin needs a moisturizer that’s designed to tackle its issues.
Try moisturizers that are oil-free and light in consistency/texture. They are less likely to clog plores and encourage breakouts. Find a light moisturizer that also combats acne and prevents breakouts specifically. I’ve been using Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Acne Moisturizer and it does all these things for my face without leaving it greasy.
The next goal is to find something like this with SPF because as much as we love the sun it jacks up our skin and can lead to so many health problems.
Additional Skincare Tips for Oily Acne Prone Skin
Be Consistent
Prior to this skin care routine I was making efforts to clear up my oily acne prone skin. In addition to using the wrong types of products for my skin I lacked consistency. Now that I do this routine twice a day every single day, I’m getting the smooth, oil reduced results I’ve been wanting.
Try Bacteria Free Cleansing Tools
It’s also important to be mindful of the tools you are using to clean your face. Clean hands aren’t enough for my skin care routine so I either use a wash cloth, face brush, or other tool. Try facial tools that are made of non-absorbent materials. They are easy to clean and dry all the way through. This discourages the growth of bacteria and other gross irritants to your face. If you do use a wash cloth switch to a new one often. I personally change my face cloth after 1-2 day use.
Truth be told I’m shocked how well behaved my skin is since I’ve been sticking to this routine. I cant’ say that I don’t ever get break outs. However, when I get a blemish it quickly goes away in the matter of a day or two without dark marks or scarring. I’m most satisfied with my oil or lack their of. It feels nice to get through an entire day without going through 10+ sessions of dabbing away shine.
