Crop tops. My oh my. What do I have to say about crop tops? I have a love hate relationship with them. I love them but I hate the length of most of them. Some of these crop tops should flat out be called bras with sleeves because that’s how most of them fit me. I am so tired of tight crop tops that make me feel uncomfortable and that’s the last thing that I’m sure anyone wants to feel when they’re out and about. I’ve been loving boxy, non form-fitting tops so I decided to make some boxy crop tops that are perfect for anyone that wants easy, fuss free crop tops.
No need to go on a shopping spree at the craft store. You will probably have all you need for this one at home already.
Supplies
- T-shirts (old or new and preferably slightly bigger than your usual size to get the flowy, boxy look)
- Scissors
- Tape Measure (String, Thread, whatever you have to take one simple measurement)
- Fabric Glue (E6000 glue, needle and thread, anything that can finish a hem of sorts)
- Any washable marking tool
The only measurement you need is the length from the top of your shoulder down to the point you would like your top to be cropped. The measurement I got was 22″
RAW EDGE CROP TOP FINISH
If you want a raw edge finish on your crop top, just cut the shirt at the measurement you took and leave the edges raw. You can also pull at the shirt’s raw hem, so it can have that raw, rolled edge (t-shirt material).
CUFFED CROP TOP FINISH
My initial measurement was 22″, but I wanted my tops to look a bit more finished with a cuffed, hem to the bottom so I added an inch to my measurement (23″ total). After marking and cutting my shirts 23″ down from the shoulder, I folded the raw edge up a half inch (1/2″) and again another half inch (1/2″). I smeared E6000 glue (works just like fabric glue) behind the cuff to keep it in place and let it dry.
On one shirt, I cut and cuffed the sleeves to a slightly shorter length and secured it with glue as well. This is totally optional.
And that’s it! Here’s how my two boxy crop tops turned out.
Don’t waste your money on a crop top you know you’re not going to wear ladies. Instead make some on your own that are exactly to your liking.
