This large scale print gingham dress from Who What Wear collection at Target is officially my little black and white dress. If it wasn’t for the way I styled it, you’d probably never guess that it is actually a summer dress. Styling summer dresses can get tricky from time to time considering some of the recent trends (even classic styles) we’ve been having.
So for this post I wanted to share some different ideas on how to style some “tricky” summer dresses.
Ways to Style Summer Dresses
Off the Shoulder Summer Dresses
Not all off the shoulder dresses are created equal. Some off the shoulder dresses cannot be adjusted to be worn on the shoulder, but don’t pack those away just yet. Pick a color from the dress and wear a long sleeve basic top under the dress. For off the shoulder dresses that can be adjusted onto the shoulders, you can wear it as such and add a coat for extra warmth. Wearing oversized sweaters over the dress is another option for a completely different look.
Summer Dresses with Big Statement Sleeves
Dresses and tops with billowy statement sleeves are super cute, but aren’t as practical when the times come to wear it with a coat. If you’re coats are not oversized, the struggle to get all that extra fabric into the coat sleeves gets real, real quick. Add a basic form fitting long sleeve top under these types of dresses to add a layer of warmth. As for outerwear, your best bet is to add a scarf and a stylish vest that gives you the warmth you need.
Strappy Cami Summer Dresses
Consider your strappy cami dresses pinafores or overall dresses for the fall. Add fun and warm statement sleeve sweaters or any other sweater underneath.
Keeping those Legs Warm
Hello leggings. I love to wear fleece lined leggings with short dresses and skirts during the fall. They have the look of simple stockings, but the functionality for fall weather. This works even better for maxi dresses because you can’t even see them.
I’m definitely keeping the majority of my summer dresses in rotation for fall. It expands my wardrobe by providing more options. I can’t wait to style a few of my favorite maxi dresses that I wore this past summer too.
