Goodwill provided a shopping credit to purchase clothing and other materials used to create these costumes. All opinions are my own.
Halloween is fast approaching and if you’re here the thought of spending money on an elaborate costume you know you won’t wear again is at the top of your mind. Maybe you’re tired of pre-made costumes that roll out every single year? Or you’re hear because you love DIY costumes with character more than anything?! Same! Goodwill sent me on a little shopping spree to create a sustainable halloween costume idea using thrifted finds. What I was not ready for are the amount of things I found to create cool DIY halloween costumes this year. So let’s get into the backstory on these DIY garden fairy costumes.
Sometimes you’re set on one creative idea and then something special comes along and changes up everything. That’s what happened when I found this gorgeous purple puff sleeve dress. It just screamed all things ethereal and I immediately thought of fairies. The dress was originally a floor length gown, but I cut half the length off and reattached it to the middle of the dress to create more puffy layers. Then I created a new waistband with ties using the purple lining I cut off from the bottom.

Now the next dress has been through a real Frankenstein operation behind the scenes, but I love how it turned out. This was originally an off the shoulder gown that fit everywhere except the bodice. The bottom half was so big and voluminous I was determined to MacGyver it into something wearable for me. I cut the bodice, pinned the raw edges down leaving me with a flowy skirt.
Next I attached some straps to the beginning of the skirt’s open zipper and the back of the dress. Yes! That sweet heart-esque neckline is the opened zipper of the “skirt”!
Now for the fairy wings. I thrifted a pair of white crinkled curtains for $3, dyed the edges blue, and glued them to these poster board wings I made using materials ($3 for 3 posterboards) from a dollar store. I used clear beading string as straps for the wings to make them less visible in photos.
All in all I love how both DIY garden fairy costumes turned out. It’s definitely the cutest sustainable costume idea I’ve come up with and perfect for adults and kids looking to be a sustainable fairy or even a butterfly this Halloween.
