The holidays are practically here and chestnuts can now roast on an open fire since I finished this white fireplace transformation project. I spent so much time dancing back and forth with the idea that we skipped the brick when we painted the entire living room
White Fireplace Makeover: Before & After
I love the look of traditional brick, but it just wasn’t flowing well in this space. We’re going for a clean, cozy, and chic aesthetic for the space, and the brick as it was didn’t fit that. Painting your fireplace white or any color isn’t too challenging and time consuming, but it definitely helps to have a plan (or this blog post). It took me one weekend to get this done.
Supplies for a White Fireplace
- Dish liquid soap
- Bucket of water
- Scrub brush
- Paint Roller
- Drop cloth
- Paint Brush
- Cleaning Tools
- Paint of Choice (we used Behr Bakery Box)
- Black Acrylic Paint (optional)
Steps to a White Fireplace
Prep floor for protection.
The first thing you should do is tape off the surrounding flooring at the base of the fire place. There are products out there that can safely remove paint from flooring, but protecting beforehand decreases clean up time. A reusable drop cloth is also a great option as well.
Clean brick thoroughly.
Taking some diluted soapy water and a scrub brush I scrubbed the fireplace from top to bottom at least twice. It’s important to get every piece of dust or cobweb cleaned off to minimize the chances of peeling and other imperfections after the paint has dried.
Let it dry thoroughly!
I spread this project out for at least two days to allow the brick to dry after cleaning it. I let our fireplace dry for a full day before painting it.
Get to painting.
Next I painted two coats on what has to be my most favorite shade of white for indoor spaces. Not too warm, not too cool, just white! Ha! Finally I sat back, sipped some wine coffee, and admired the new fireplace from the living room.
Thanks to everyone that voted YES to paint it because I’m in love! I’m so happy with how it turned out, and can’t wait to put up the tree and all the affordable Christmas decor I’ve begun stashing away.
